Today, November 21, 2024, the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representative passed H.R. 9495, a bill which would allow the federal government to terminate the tax-exempt status of nonprofit organizations without explanation or due process. The bill now moves onto the Senate, where it will face another vote.
If this bill passes, the Secretary of Treasury would have the authority to designate any organization a “terrorist-supporting organization”, thus removing the group’s tax-exempt status.
This designation would be arbitrary, deployed at the whim of the Secretary, and does not require explanation.
Organizations targeted with “terrorist-supporting” status would then have just 90 days to prove their innocence - a near-impossible task when the accuser holds all the power.
The potential outcomes of Bill H.R. 9495 are alarming! Charities and nonprofit organizations working on issues that oppose the Trump administration’s agenda could easily be targeted.
These issues could include:
- Reproductive health and abortion care
- Immigration and civil rights
- Anti-war / Anti-genocide initiatives
- Voters’ rights
- Climate change and climate justice
- LGBTQIA+ and human rights
Please support Care2’s petition to protect the nonprofit sector by demanding representatives vote “NO” today!
