Infographic: How Do Social Network Users Lean Politically?

As political campaigns and nonprofits gear up for the election cycle, I thought I would share this infographic that attempts to map the politics of social media properties like Facebook and websites like Wikipedia. The data was determined through the analysis of thousands of people on Facebook and their “Likes”, political preferences, and polling data. Predictive modeling was then used to map the politics of the social web. While some of the data is certainly interesting and may give organizations a window into sites they can be using to cultivate and engage people who are Obama supporters, it’s important to note that the data is based on people’s profiles who opted into an app called TrendSetter (developed by Patrick Raffini, a strategist who works with conservative politicians and organizations).

Check out some of the highlights:

  • The most politically engaged users are on Quora, BuzzFeed, Gmail, and Wikipedia and users lean left.
  • Users on Yelp, Reddit, Instagram, Tumblr, Zappos, and Spotify lean left but are not the most politcally engaged.
  • Linkedin, whose users are politically active and Living Social are considered a "swing" network.
  • Pinterest, which is dominated by women is still up for grabs in the political spectrum but they are not politcally engaged.
  • YouTube and Angry Birds lean slightly more left then Pinterest but is still considered a “swing” platform. However, Angry Birds users have low political engagement.
  • The most conservative sites were Farmville, Ebay, and Paypal
