The Summer of Social Good

This summer, Mashable, one of the most popular blogs that covers mainstream tech and social media issues launched Summer of Social Good, a cool initiative that raises money for the Humane Society of the United States, World Wildlife Fund, Oxfam, and LIVESTRONG. For the past three months, Mashable has been using its power of “Social Influence” via Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, blogs and other online media to help spread the word about the initiative and encourage social media users to donate money to help support nonprofits. They have raised close to $30K to date. Mashable has also been using their blog to discuss topics such as fair trade products, mobile activism, and their top 10 list of YouTube videos for social good.

On Friday, August 28th, Mashable will be hosting the culminating event, the Social Good Conference in NYC. It will also be streamed online in real time. The one day conference will feature speakers ranging from Beth Kanter who authors Beth’s Blog to Geoff Livingston of CRT/tanaka as well as Randi Zuckerberg of Facebook, Kari Dunn of the Case Foundation, and Drew Olaboff, who started the popular Twitter hashtag #BlameDrewsCancer after he was diagnosed with cancer in May of 2009. Click here to read his story.

Sessions will explore:

  • How to use social media for social good.
  • Messages that resonate passionate donors.
  • How to cut through the chatter on Twitter and generate more fans to your Facebook Page.
  • Which social media formats are hot or not.
