Digg is Dying. Who are the Players Now?

Digg, the once beloved link-sharing site that power users were able to game has been dying a slow death over the past couple of years. Between Digg’s redesign, Founder Kevin Rose leaving the company, and other dud product launches like Newswire, Digg just can’t compete with other social networks where people go to share news these days – Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Google+, Care2, etc. Since January of 2011 Digg’s unique web visits have declined by more than 50% and gone from 9.4M monthly visitors to 4.3M visitors in October 2011, according to Quantcast.

Sites like Reddit.com have clearly benefitted from Digg’s demise. In January of 2011 they had over 10.5M unique monthly visitors and their traffic has been climbing monthly. By the end of October 2011 they were almost at 14M unique visitors, according to data from Quantcast.

So what does this mean for nonpfrofits? Nonprofit campaigners should definitely continue to use Facebook Twitter, and Reddit to share news around their issues, but looking beyond the usual suspects to find other, targeted sources of donors and activists is important too. For example, Care2 (which runs the Frogloop blog) and has over 17M members is one of the first social action networks for people who care two make a difference. Razoo, a social fundraising network is another great platform to check out. While it’s not a news network, what nonprofit doesn’t need to raise money these days. And Razoo has helped to raise over $74M for organizations. You can use Razoo to create a fundraising campaign for special projects or events and accept donations on your Razoo page, your own website or through your Facebook page. They also have a cool Iphone app where you can check up on your fundraiser, post updates, and thank your donors. Their donation fees are low at only 2.9%, which means more money goes directly to your nonprofit. Some other platforms charge between 5% and 7%.
