Mobile Devices Driving Major Traffic to Social Networks

The world is becoming a lot more mobile – particularly when it comes to people using certain social networks. This week the Real Time Report said that mobile devices drive more than half of traffic to Twitter and Pandora. Interestingly that is not the case with Facebook. Only 1/3 of their traffic comes from mobile devices.

 

I think part of the reason that mobile traffic is much lower on Facebook is because they are trying to become the king of social networks. All the expanded functionality that they have built and included in the mobile app is clunky and buggy which makes for a frustrating user experience at times. More focused and streamlined social networks like Twitter have an easier time adapting their social network to a mobile platform.

Apple Users Are More Generous than PC and Android Users

Razoo, a popular online social fundraising platform did a study measuring donation habits of Apple, PC, and Android users. Their research showed that Mac users are more generous than PC users. iPad users gave 40% more per donation than any other mobile device user, Every iOS device gave more than Android or Blackberry.

 

Average donation value by mobile device:

  • iPad $168.67
  • iPhone $102.80
  • Android $91.42
  • Blackberry $24
  • Windows $18.75

Average donation by browser:

  • Safari $134.77
  • Internet Explorer $122.11
  • Chrome $113.00
  • Firefox $111.34

You hear a lot about how important it is for your organization to have a presence on social networks. After all some of the top 5 websites in the U.S ranked by traffic are social networks like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. Twitter: over 200 million users via ReadWriteWeb
Renren: over 170 million users via iResearch iUser Tracker
Qzone: 480 million users via Wikipedia
Sina Weibo: over 140 million users via SINA Corporation
LinkedIn: 120 million members via LinkedIn
Groupon: 115 million subscribers via Reuters
